Cheerios: Will it really lower my cholesterol?
One disease: Stress
In the late 1960’s, noted Canadian researcher Hans Seyle, M.D., wrote a book in which he presented his findings on the effect of stress on the human body. Today in 2009, The Stress of Life can still be found on the shelves of your favorite bookstore. His work earned Dr. Selye much recognition and the acclaim of all those in the healing arts. Seyle proved that stress is not a vague or undefinable term used to indicate that we are unloved, overworked, and underpaid, but found that the body responds to any kind of stress, be it mechanical, chemical, or emotional, in a very specific and predictable way.
So, my question to you is, what is health and what is disease?
Health is defined as a normal condition of the body and mind with all the parts working normally, a harmonious integration of cellular activities in the various systems to meet an ever-changing environment. Pretty simple huh? Well…disease is something else: it’s disturbed function, something that is not working normally, an inability of the body to maintain a constant “normal” environment against the various stimuli or challenges that are presented to it. It just so happens that there are no new body processes at work in disease that were not here in health…in disease there are only normal functions that are going too fats or too slow, or are otherwise inappropriate- out of time with need. The question then becomes how to recognize this inability before it becomes disastrous.
Symptoms
Symptoms are the first clue that something is out of order within the body, however it does not always mean that that the disease process has begun. It means that anytime a person experiences symptoms we must look at he internal environment in order to assess which cell, tissue, or organ is under stress. It may be mechanical, chemical, or emotional: the source really does not matter, the bottom line is that the cell is unable to perform its function properly because the stress is is either too strong or has been there too long and the cell either doesn’t have adequate nutrition or has accumulated too much waste. In other words its environment is not adequate and now requires the assistance of the society of cells to do what they can in order to maintain the internal environment…stealing from Peter to pay Paul…the body will continue this process until all resources have been exhausted, at which time the body is no longer able to sustain such demands. ONLY at this point is disease identifiable through a blood test! You become diseased when you can no longer maintain the internal environment.
Now let me ask you, how many poeple do you know who are going to the doctor, looking for answers, only to be told that everything looks fine? Remember, symptoms are your first clue! Medical research attempts to find magic bullets for each symptom complex, as if disease were the primary problem! Disease is perverted health; it cannot be its own cause, nor can it be its own cure and it can certainly not its own prevention! The human body is a self healing organism, a finely orchestrated symphony, that when provided all the right tools, is able to maintain a level of homeostasis. If you or someone you might know is experiencing unexplainable symptoms of any kind, it is time to assess which instrument is malfunctioning so that you can then provide the tools necessary for reconstruction.
