This is interesting. I was finishing up a book called The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. I use Amino Acid therapy in my clinic with people that I feel that need certain ones, only after assessment. Last night when I was reading, I came upon this:
“One of the main causes of sleep apnea is serotonin deficiency. Studies using AA tryptophan and 5HTP have shown them to be helpful. Why? First, serotonin directly affects the lungs (my assumption is that is causing more of a parasympathetic response). Second, lost of O2 is required for serotonin production, so if physical obstructions block O2 flow, serotonin production is diminished. Third, if a preexisting low-serotonin condition caused characteristic afternoon and evening carb craving, increased wieght could easily result, contributing to obstructed breathing.
Regarding other solutions to sleep apnea that have been found helpful:
1. Food allergy testing- can cause shallower breaths and more per minute
2. Low thyroid condition- leads to weight gain (can be from adrenal issues or being estrogen dominant)
3. Low progesterone levels of women during menopause
4. High levels of cortisol and norep”
